Wool, and why it matters
We use Woolmark-certified wool for reasons that have nothing to do with marketing and everything to do with how a rug feels in ten years.
It would be cheaper to blend in synthetic fibre. Most rugs at our price do. We don't, and here is why. This is one of those decisions that costs us money on paper and makes complete sense the moment you have owned a real wool rug for a couple of years.
What wool actually does
Pure wool does things no synthetic can. It springs back underfoot instead of crushing flat. It is naturally resistant to dirt and even to flame. It holds dye beautifully and ages with grace rather than going dull. It is warm in winter, cool in summer, a fibre that has kept mountain families comfortable for thousands of years. A synthetic pile mimics the look on day one; by year three it is a different object. A pure wool rug does the opposite. It gets better.
We spent a long afternoon in a rug shop early on where the owner poured us tea and showed us bins of shiny commercial wool, glossier than what we saw at altitude, cheaper by a wide margin, and, when we pulled a strand between two fingers, quietly wrong. It was blended, the fibres were short, and it would not last. We finished the tea, thanked him, and walked out. That was the day we decided where our wool comes from would be a fixed point, not a variable.
Why we insist on Woolmark
We use Woolmark-certified wool because it is an independent verification of exactly that quality. Proof, not a promise. It means the fibre in your rug has met a standard we cannot simply claim for ourselves. The certification also carries an ethical baseline about how the animals are treated, which matters to us, and which we have written about in more detail on our craft page.
In practice this means every rug we make begins with fleece we would happily hold up to a microscope. We test each batch against a small in-house set of criteria for staple length, crimp, and cleanliness before it goes anywhere near the dye pots. It is boring, unglamorous work, and it is the reason a decade-old Azral piece looks the way it does.
